Abstract
1393047 Chlorinated carboxylic acids and esters SOLVAY & CIE 9 Nov 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 52050/73 Heading C2C Chlorinated carboxylic acids and esters of general formula wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are H, Cl, F, alkyl or aryl but at least one is H and R 4 is H or optionally substituted alkyl or aryl, are prepared by chlorination in the liquid phase of under electromagnetic radiation and in the presence of a metal compound. The reactant is preferably acrylic or methacrylic acid or an ester. The catalyst is preferably a compound of a group Va metal, e.g. SbCl 5 . U.V. and/or visible radiation of 2000-5000 A is preferably used. In the examples 2,3-dichloropropionic acid and methyl 2,3-dichloropropionate are prepared.
