Abstract
1393042 Olefinically unsaturated compounds CIBA-GEIGY AG 29 June 1973 [30 June 1972] 30989/73 Addition to 1393041 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] A compound of Formula (1) in which A and A 1 , which may be the same or different, are phenyl, naphthyl, diphenylyl, 2- phenyl- 1 ,2,3-triazol-4-yl or pyridyl, optionally substituted by a non-chromophoric substituent, and D is a 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylylene group, a 1,5- or 2,6-naphthylene group or a 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene or a dibenzofuran group bonded to the ethylene groups in the 2,7-position, are prepared by reacting a sulphonic salt of Formula (IV) in which the groups B, which are the same or different, are C 4 -C 7 polymethylene groups optionally containing a hetero atom and/or a C 1 -C 4 alkyl substituent, M is an anion and n is 1 or 2, with an aldehyde ACHO and/or an aldehyde A 1 CHO in the presence of a strong base and of a strongly polar, protic or aprotic water-miscible solvent to give a diepoxide of Formula (VII) and reducing this in known manner. The salt of general Formula IV may be prepared by treating a compound of Formula (II ) X-CH 2 -D-Cu 2 -X 1 in which X is a halogen atom, a hydroxy group or a group -OOCX 1 in which X is a hydrocarbon group in a strongly acid medium and in a molar ratio of at least 1 : 2 with 1 or 2 organic sulphides of general Formula III The products are stated to be useful as optical brightening agents.
