Abstract

1420520 Sulphonated condensation products CIBA-GEIGY AG 22 Oct 1973 [3 Nov 1972] 49083/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division Dl] The invention comprises (a) the production of a sulphonated condensation product, by reacting and sulphonating, in either order, an aromatic compound that contains at least one replaceable H atom in the nucleus with a compound of the formula wherein X represents a direct bond or oxygen, Hal represents Cl or Br, and n is a number from 1 to 4 and optionally condensing the sulphonated product with HCHO or HCHO donors; and (b) compounds of the formulae wherein A represents a radical of an aromatic compound that is bonded to the CH 2 via a ring C atom, M represents H or a salt-forming cation and n and p are each 1 to 4. Preferred aromatic compounds are mononuclear or polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons which are optionally substituted by OH or C 1 -C 4 alkyl or alkoxy groups. The reaction between aromatic compounds and the compounds of Formula (I) is preferably conducted in an acid medium. The sulphonation is preferably carried out with concentrated H 2 SO 4 , oleum or ClSO 3 H. Examples 1 to 15 are for the preparation of the condensation products. They are useful in duestuff preparations.
