Abstract
1393012 Resistors AVCO CORP 2 May 1972 [5 May 1971] 20439/72 Heading HIS A static bleed resistor, or drain for electrostatic charges, 10, Fig. 1, comprises a number of fibrous resistance elements 13 embedded in a non-conductive, non-tracking (i.e. does not form an electrically conductive path when thermally dissipated) plastics matrix 14, the elements having a resistance of 1011 ohms/inch or more. The plastics matrix is typically a homo- or copolymer of polyformaldehyde, e.g. Delrin (Registered Trade Mark) and Celcon, or a fluorocarbon, e.g. Teflon (Registered Trade Mark) and Kel-F, the resistance element comprising about 10<SP>5</SP> fibres of carbon filament formed from a cellulose material, e.g. rayon, the ends 16 being exposed to the atmosphere at the conical discharge end 17. The resistor is coupled to the body 12 by a conductive adhesive 20 or alternatively a threaded end of the resistor is screwed into a complementary threaded recess in the body. A metal sleeve (not shown) may be secured to the cylindrical surface of the resistor to protect it in the event of lightning strikes to the body 12.
