Abstract

1392972 Liquefying or separating gases PETROCARBON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 17 Sept 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 44195/72 Heading F4P A process for coding a feedstock, e.g. for liquefying natural gas in line 14, comprises cooling and partially condensing a compressed mixture of gases from line 22 in heat exchanger 2, dividing the partially condensed mixture into two portions, one of which leads to separator 4, and the other of which by-passes the separator 4, combining the uncondensed vapour from separator 4 with the by-pass portion before cooling the combination in heat exchanger 6 to effect further condensation and separating out a second liquid condensate in separator 8, and expanding at 26, 32 the first and second liquid condensates from separators 4, 8 to provide streams of refrigerating liquid which pass back through exchangers 6 and 10 respectively. Valve 42 controls the ratio between the divided portions of the mixture partially condensed in exchanger 2. Condensate in line 44 produced by cooling the feed mixture to line 22 to remove the heat of compression thereof is sub-cooled in exchanger 2 and then expanded at 40 to pass back through exchanger 2 as refrigerating fluid. The compressed gas mixture can be separated into two portions before entry to exchanger 2, the valve determining the ratio of the portions being controlled by means sensing the temperature of the gas being liquefied between exchangers 6 and 10 (Fig. 2, not shown). The feedstock may be the compressed mixture of gases, whereby the process becomes one of separating the mixture by successive cooling, and in this case the condensed portion from each separator can be expanded and fed back through the exchanger in which it was formed without the need for sub-cooling in the next coldest exchanger.
