Abstract

1392962 Toluates and their oxidation HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc 30 June 1972 [1 July 1971] 30796/72 Heading C2C The invention comprises #-acyloxyethyl-ptoluate in which the 'Acyl' group represents formyl, acetyl or propionyl. These compounds may be prepared either by esterifying toluic acid with ethylene glycol and esterifying the resultant compound with the appropriate aliphatic acid; or by the acidolysis of p-toluic acid with an appropriate ethylene glycol diacylate. The invention also relates to a method for the preparation of a precursor for polyethylene terephthate containing mono- or bis-(#-acyloxyethyl) terephthalate and terephthalic acid comprising oxidizing the compounds according to the invention in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen.
