Abstract
1392827 Free piston engines J H JARRET and J M B JARRET 7 April 1972 [9 April 1971] 16179/72 Heading F1B A free piston internal combustion engine comprises an elongated housing 1 and two piston units 2, 3 reciprocable in the housing and defining with the housing a combustion chamber 8 between adjacent ends of the piston units. It is stated that each of the chambers 21, 22 contains hydraulic fluid which provides resilient means for moving the respective piston unit from the outermost dead centre position to the innermost dead centre position. The induction coils 16, 17 and 18 and the magnetic cores 11, 12 have a three-fold function. They provide means for starting the engine, means for controlling synchronized reciprocating movement of the piston units during operation of the engine and means for extracting energy in the form of electrical current. Other means for extracting energy from the engine can be provided instead of or in addition to the induction coils.
