Abstract

1392746 Sizing cellulose fibres; sizing paper KEMANORD AB 17 July 1972 [15 July 1971 16 Nov 1971] 33430/72 Headings DIP and D2B A process for sizing cellulose fibres or cellulose fibre containing material comprises treating said fibres or material with a compound or mixture of compounds having the formula R 1 R 2 NCOCl where R 1 is an organic hydrophobic hydrocarbon group containing from 8 to 40 carbon atoms which is optionally substituted provided that the substituent (s) cannot be a carbomoyl halide group or groups and does not or do not adversely affect the sizing process and R 2 is hydrogen, a C 1 -C 7 alkyl group or a group as defined for R 1 . One or more of the compounds may be dispersed in water with on emulsifier e.g. polyethylene imine, polyimide, cationic starch cationic polyacrylamide, anionic polyacrylamide, stearylamine HCl, distearylamine HCI, dimethyldistrearylammonium chloride or a nonionic emulsifier. The fibres may be in the form of an aqueous suspension, or in the form of board, or as mixed with other material such as semisynthetic paper containing plastics materials. In example 1 paper sheets are sized with a benzene solution of the carbamoyl chloride. In examples 2-5 aqueous dispersions are used to size paper. In examples 6-9 an aqueous dispersion is used to size cellulose fibres in aqueous suspension and the suspension drained to form paper sheets or boards. Exemplified substituents R 1 /R 2 are CH 3 /C 16 H 33 , C 18 H 37 /C 18 H 37 , C 16 H 33 /cyclohexyl, C 18 H 37 /phenyl CH 3 /C 17 H 37 -O-(CH 2 ) 3 , CH 3 /C 10 H 21 , C 12 H 25 /C 12 H 25 and CH 3 /C 14 H 29 . R 1 and R 2 may contain ether, carboalkoxy, aryloxy, arylalkyloxy/keto and tertiary amide groups. Preferably 0.001 to 5% by wt. of fibres of the sizing compound and 0.1 to 10% of emulsifier are added to the fibrous suspension or impregnated onto the fibrous sheet.
