Abstract
1392670 Luminescent compositions VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT FIZIKOTEKHNICHESKIKH I RADIOTEKNICHESKIKH IZMERENY, VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT MONOKRISTALLOV and INSTITUT YADERNOI FIZIKI AKADEMII NAUK UZBEXKOI SSR 20 March 1973 13350/73 Heading C4S [Also in Division C3] A film for indicating and measuring ionizing radiation doses comprises a film of a non- halogenated polymer containing a light resistant luminescent triaryl pyrazoline dye of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are aryl or substituted aryl groups and R 3 is a group of the formula Specific dyes are disclosed. The polymer may be for example, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose di- or triacetate, a mixture of polymethyl methacrylate and cellulose di- or triacetate or a mixture of polystyrene and butyl rubber. Examples of R 1 are C 6 H 5 -, CH 3 C 6 H 4 -, CH 3 OC 6 H 4 -, alpha naphthyl or (CH 3 ) 2 NC 6 H 4 - and examples of R 2 are C 6 H 5 -, ClC 6 H 4 , beta naphthyl and biphenyl. The film may also contain a halogenated hydrocarbon such as hexachlorobenzene, hexabromoethane and tetrabromo-ethane and may also contain a plasticizer. Detailed examples are included. When irradiated the films change colour from bright red through orange, to yellow, depending on the dose. By calibration the colour change can be used for quantitative measurement. Applications are given. The film may be unsupported or on a support such as paper and bonded by an adhesive of a solution of the same composition as that of the film.
