Abstract

1467645 Laminates including photopolymerized adhesives SUN CHEMICAL CORP 23 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 3164/74 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Substrates, e.g. foils, films, fabrics, papers, are bonded using as an adhesive a photopolymerizable composition comprising an ethylenically unsaturated compound (e.g. an ester of an unsaturated acid such as acrylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol) and as photoinitiator a composition comprising (a) a compound containing a carbonyl group (e.g. benzaldehyde or benzophenone), (b) an organic compound of the formula where X is N, As, Sb, P or Bi and R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are hydrogen or alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl groups which may be joined to form a ring and (c) at least one compound containing hydrogen, carbon and halogen only (e.g. hexachloroparaxylene, pentachlorobenzene or chlorinated paraffin, the weight ratio of (a) : (b) : (c) being 1-30 ; 1-30 : 1-30. One substrate should be transparent or translucent to the radiation, e.g. U.V. or gamma rays used. Polymer coated "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark) may be bonded to polymer coated "Cellophane" or polypropylene, "Mylar" (Registered Trade Mark) may be bonded to aluminium or copper or polypropylene may be bonded to aluminium or benzophenone, as (b) triethanolamine, trioctyl arsine, triphenyl stilbene, tributyl bismuthine, methyl butyl phenyl arsine, triphenyl phosphine, methyldiethanolamine or dibutylphenyl phosphine and as (c) hexachloroparaxylene, pentachlorobenzene or a chlorinated paraffin. The composition may be used as a coating, an adhesive, or combined with a pigment to form ink. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,408,265.
