Abstract
1392593 Gas discharge display panels SPERRY RAND CORP 29 March 1973 [14 April 1972] 15053/73 Heading H1D A gas discharge display system comprises an array of display cells with a common anode and cathode, means for applying a gas plasma to a selected cell to reduce its ignition voltage and a source of pulsed sustaining voltage connected across the anode and cathode, the amplitude, duration and spacing between the pulses being such that only previously ignited cells are reignited. A discharge panel includes a display section 10, a stack 11 of addressing anodes 12 and a plasma reservoir. The display section comprises anode 13, insulator 15, cathode 14 and insulated plates 17, 18 which inhibit sputtering from the cathode to the face plate 16. A sustain voltage source 25 is connected across the anode 13 and cathode 14. Applying a potential to selected anodes 12 causes a gas plasma column to extend through the perforated plates to a corresponding portion of plate 13 enabling a discharge to be ignited by the sustain voltage. A discharge is erased by momentarily disrupting the sustain voltage. Cell brightness can be varied by altering the pulse frequency. The display panel is described in Specification 1,377,631.
