Abstract
1392455 Coating glass containers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972 (2)] 3848/72 and 3849/72 Heading B2E A glass container e.g. a bottle has a surface coat comprising aluminium or iron phosphate or a mixture thereof. The coating is applied in solutions to hot glass (550-650‹C) by dipping or spraying or similarly onto warm glass (100-150‹C) to evaporate solvent followed by heating to 500-650‹C. The coating compositions may be in the form of phosphate, acid phosphate, or phosphate ester. Complex phosphates, which may be monomeric or polymeric, are preferred, complex compositions preferably including at least one chemically bound water, or hydroxy compound R-O where R is C 1-12 alkyl, and an anionic group of a strong inorganic acid (other than oxyphosphorus acids) or a carboxylic acid. Examples of such anionic groups are halide, nitrate, sulphate, acetate, benzoate and perchlorate. The ratio of the number of grams atoms of aluminium to the number of gram atoms of phosphorus is preferably 1:3 to 2:1. The preferred iron to phosphorus ratio is 1:0.5 to 1:2.9. The solution is preferably aqueous with up to 10% of an alcohol to promote wetting. Pigments, colourants, U.V. filters, such as Mn, Ti or Fe compounds, or particulate material may be added. Graphite may be included to give a semiconductive coating. A cold-end coating of a wax or stearate may be provided over the phosphate coating.
