Abstract

1392429 W.C. Supply Valves ITT INDUSTRIES LTD 7 Feb 1974 [14 Feb 1973 5678/74 Heading E1C [Also in Division F2] A vacuum prevention valve for a toilet bowl has a tortuous path between an inlet 26 and an outlet 46, controlled by a valve element 66 which rests on the annular rim 28 of the inlet pipe. The valve element comprises a flat top plate 68 having a depending flange 70 at its periphery and four radially extending ribs which are a loose fit within the inlet pipe 26. A resilient gasket 74 is located on top of the plate 68 by a rivet 76. The housing comprises a cap member 24 and a base member 22 moulded from polypropylene or ABS. Depending and upstanding ribs in the cap and base form the tortuous path. In the absence of water pressure at the inlet 26 the valve is positioned as shown with this outlet 46 vented to atmosphere through a hole 58 in the cap and the top of the outlet pipe sealed by the valve to prevent any possibility of syphoning off the contents of the toilet bowl. Water pressure lifts the valve and the gasket 74 seals the vent hole 58. In an alternative embodiment, Figs 6-12 (not shown), an additional outlet (112) is provided having a less tortuous path through the valve and therefore at a slightly higher pressure than the outlet 46 to the toilet bowl. This extra outlet may be used for a spray for cleaning the bowl.
