Abstract

1392172 Vehicle axles; securing wheels to permanent hubs SKF (UK) Ltd 21 April 1972 [9 March 1971] 6364/71 Headings B7D B7C and B7H A vehicle axle assembly, Fig. 1, comprises an axle shaft 18 having a bearing assembly 12 mounted thereon between an abutment 40 and a wheel support member 22 secured on the axle shaft by a nut 23, the bearing assembly 12 comprising two rows of balls 16, 17 interposed between respective raceways on an outer bearing member 13 bolted to a steerable hub member 10 and raceways on two inner bearing members 14, 15 which are mounted on the axle shaft 18 and are clamped between the wheel support member 22 and the abutment 40 in abutting contact with one another or with a distance piece therebetween to set the clearance or preload between the balls and their raceways. The axle shaft 18 is connected to a drive shaft 21 by a constant-velocity universal coupling, and the wheel support member 22 and the axle shaft have inter-engaging splines. The wheel support member 22 has an integral brake disc 45 and carries studs 46 for attaching a wheel. In Fig. 7, the axle shaft 93 is not driven and a wheel is located on the wheel support member 82 by dowels 81 and secured by a conical clamping ring 90 and a bolt 91 which is screwed into a threaded bore 92 in the axle shaft and has a nylon insert 95 to prevent loosening. The wheel may alternatively be secured on the axle shaft by a nut, Figs. 6, 8 (not shown). In Fig. 5 (not shown) the outer bearing member is bolted to a hub member (64) welded to the end of a transverse axle tube (65).
