In particular R may be -CH 2 CHA.OZ in which Z is H, alkanoyl of two to eight carbon atoms; acetyl bearing Cl, phenyl, hydroxy, phenoxy or methoxy as substituent; thenoyl; benzoyl optionally substituted by Cl, CH 3 or CH 3 O; or a radical of formula R<SP>2</SP>-NH-CO- or R<SP>3</SP>-O-CO-, in which R<SP>2</SP> is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, phenyl, mono- or di-chlorophenyl or methylphenyl; R<SP>3</SP> is alkyl of one to eight carbon atoms, alkoxyalkyl of three to six carbon atoms, cyclohexyl, benzyl, phenyl, phenylethyl or substituted phenyl; A is H, methyl, phenyl or a radical of formula -CH 2 -R<SP>4</SP>; or -CH 2 NR<SP>5</SP>R<SP>6</SP>, in which R<SP>4</SP> is hydroxy, alkoxy of one to eight carbon atoms, #-methoxyethoxy, #-ethoxyethoxy, #-butoxyethoxy, phenoxy alone or bearing Cl, methyl or methoxy as substituent, or phenylmercapto; R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are alkyl groups of one to four carbon atoms or #-hydroxyethyl or R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> together with the N atom make up pyrrolidine, piperidine, morpholine, thiomorpholine dioxide, piperazine, N-methylpiperazine or N<SP>1</SP>-#-hydroxyethylpiperazine radicals. The compounds may be prepared from compounds of formula in which Hal is Cl or Br, by reaction with NaOR<SP>1</SP>, or from by reaction with an epoxide of formula and an alcohol of formula R<SP>1</SP>OH to form a compound of formula followed if desired by conversion of the radical -CH 2 CHAOH into a different radical R. The compounds are used as optical brighteners, e.g. for synthetic fibres such as polyamides, cellulose esters, polyesters and acrylonitrile polymers.
