Abstract
1391109 Concrete piles; wells &c L A TURZILLO 11 Sept 1972 42133/72 Headings E1F and E1H To form a cast-in situ concrete pile or a sand-drain, a hollow shafted continuous-flight auger 12 is used to form a bore hole 18, the auger is then withdrawn in stages to define cavity portions and at each stage cementitious material in the case of a pile, or sand in the case of a sand drain is fed through the hollow shaft 20, by means of a second auger 21 to fill the respective cavity portion. The auger 21 is axially movable relative to the auger 12 to open or close the lower end of shaft 20, and is fed from a hopper 28. When forming piles, relatively thin, soil-penetrating grout may be pumped through the shaft of auger 21 to form an enlarged foot for the pile and to strengthen the soil around the periphery of the pile. The cutter 22, rotated by auger 21 compacts the material introduced. In a modification, the cutter 22 has a hydraulically controlled radially extendible blade so that the cavity formed may be given an enlarged base. The augers 12, 21 together with the hopper 28 are slidably mounted on a framework R, the auger 12 being rotated by a reversible hydraulic motor 16 via chains 17, and the auger 21 being driven by motor 27. Auger 21 is vertically movable relative to auger 12 by hydraulic cylinders 25 to open and close the end of the hollow shaft of auger 12.
