Abstract

1390885 Neutron sources ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd 16 March 1973 [16 May 1972] 12728/73 Heading G6P A target arrangement for production of neutrons when under deuteron bombardment comprises a target including a layer 10 of tritiated titanium sandwiched between layers 11 of a metal oxide which act to inhibit diffusion of tritium out of the target layer and diffusion back into the target layer of deuterons that have passed therethrough, a layer 12 of aluminium on the beam side of the target layer to act as a sputter shield and a metallic backing layer 13, and cooling means adjacent the backing layer for cooling the target and absorbing and diffusing stepped deuterons. The layer 13 comprises a palladium or palladium-silver alloy. The layers 11 may comprise aluminium or yttrium oxide. Upon activation by a beam 15 of deuterons, energetic neutrons (#14 Mev.) are produced in the target layer 10 which comprises sub-stoichiometric titanium tritide.
