Abstract
1390474 Light guides NIPPON SELFOC CO Ltd 28 June 1973 [28 June 1972] 30857/73 Heading G2J A multi-layer integrated optical device having a dielectric substrate, e.g. of glass, comprises first and second light-propagating layers of relatively high refractive index formed between outer layers of relatively low refractive index, the two light propagating layers being separated by an isolation layer having a refractive index lower than that of the outer layers. The layers may be formed by sputtering, ion injection or ion exchange, and in a specific embodiment the high refractive index layers are made by ion substitution obtained by applying a D.C. voltage across opposed faces of the substrate which are coated respectively with Tl 2 SO 4 -ZnSO 4 and KNO 3 , and the isolation layer by substituting NaNO 3 for KNO 3 in the above method. The refractive index may change abruptly or gradually.
