Abstract

1390121 Matrix displays WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 15 March 1972 [13 April 1971] 12057/72 Heading G5C [Also in Divisions H1 and H4] An electrostatically deflectable light valve structure comprises an array of spaced apart deformable light reflective elements each supported by a spacer post member extending from a base member which is provided with an electrode near the base of each spacer post. In Fig. 29, a solid state device comprises an array of horizontal electrodes 162 deposited on a glass base, and an array of vertical electrodes 168 supported on silicon pillars 170 located within apertures provided in the horizontal electrodes. Application of voltages to a selected electrode in each array causes deflection of the selected electrode 168 at the crossing point. The device may be used in a Schlieren optical system (Fig. 1, not shown), wherein light is reflected on to the reflective electrodes 168 by a striped mirror and reflected back on to the stripes unless an electrode 168 is deflected, when the light passes through the stripes to a display screen.
