Abstract
1389903 Universal joints A BELLOMO 23 June 1972 [26 June 1971] 29686/72 Heading F2U The groove cross-section in at least the inner member 1 of a homokinetic joint comprising torque transmitting balls 10, 11 located in intersecting grooves in mating spherical surfaces, is relieved (e.g. at 23) at its edge on the unloaded side to give a bearing arc 20-21 of less than 180 degrees while retaining at least 90 degrees arc 19-20 on the loaded side of the plane containing the groove axis 8<SP>1</SP>. The edge at this side may also be relieved at 22. The material of the inner member 1 and may be also the outer member 4 may be steel with either 1%, or 0.5% carbon, with traces of chromium and possibly manganese or molybdenum. It may be heat treated by quenching in a salt bath to 180‹ C. followed by air cooling and tempering to between 150‹ and 220‹ C.
