1389831 Recording system EMI Ltd 16 Feb 1972 [24 Feb 1971 20 July 1971 5 Aug 1971 1 Dec 1971 23 Dec 1971] 5293/71 34000/71 36746/71 55662/71 and 59896/71 Heading G5R Apparatus for recording information on a medium comprises a leading element for preparing the medium, e.g. by grooving or planing and coupled thereto a second element incorporating a laser for deforming the prepared surface in response to the information. As described, the medium is a recording disc and the information can be in the form of a frequency or amplitude modulated signal. The recording disc which can be a lacquer layer 2 on aluminium base 21 is prepared by a leading element (not shown) which forms the grooves 5 of such depth that the ridges 4 are below the original surface. The second element includes the laser 25, the beam 24 of which acts on the medium via a Pockel cell which modulates the beam with the information to be recorded. The ridges 18, 19, 20 of the record are deformed by the laser beam such that when a positive record is formed the deformations lie at the bottom of the grooves. Alternatively the beam can deform the groove base directly. The elements are coupled and are moved relative to the record along paths parallel to a record radius, Fig. 3 (not shown), and arrangements are provided, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), for focussing and maintaining the focussing of the laser beam. Sufficient depth of focus being provided to maintain the beam intensity constant over the cutting or deforming depth. A stream of nitrogen can be used to disperse the particles removed from the record surface. The record can be played back by a stylus or an optical sensing transducer.
