Abstract

1389388 Photo curable compositions AKZO NV 29 June 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 31215/73 Heading C3P Compositions curable by UV light comprise a compound having at least two groups of the formula and a photo catalyst of the formula wherein m=0, 1 or 2 and p represents an integer from 1-5 and wherein, when p=1, R represents an alkyl or alkoxy group having at least 4 carbon atoms and, when p>1, R is an alkyl or alkoxy group and the R groups together have a total of at least 4 carbon atoms. The photo curable compound is generally a di- or higher (meth)acrylate ester of a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate or 2,2 - bis - [4 - (2 - methacryloyloxyethoxy)- phenyl]propane. The composition may optionally include a copolymerizable compound, such as acrylic or methacrylic acid or a mono-ester thereof, or a resin such as toluene-sulphonamide-formaldehyde resin. The compositions are useful as binders in lacquers or printing inks and in such cases may include a pigment, e.g. carbon black, a solvent, a siccative, e.g. a cobalt soap, and triethanolamine.
