Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:3-Hydroxy-3-methylbutyl (meth)acrylates expressed by the formula (R is H or methyl). USE:A raw material for adhesives, tacky agents, coatings, printing inks, etc., having low odor and viscosity, anaerobic and ultraviolet ray curability and capable of exhibiting excellent adhesive properties and high adhesive strength. PREPARATION:The primary hydroxyl group part of an alcohol (e.g. 3- methylbutane-1,3-diol) is subjected to ester interchange reaction with an acrylic or methacrylic acid ester to afford the aimed compounds expressed by the formula. The above-mentioned reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor (e.g. hydroquinone) and a catalyst [e.g. iron complex of N,N-bis(salicylidene)-ethylenediamine] at 70-130 deg.C. The acrylic or methacrylic acid ester is used in a molar amount of 1.5-10 times based on the alcohol and the catalyst is used in an amount of 0.2-4.0wt.% based on the alcohol. The polymerization inhibitor is used in an amount of 0.1-2.0g based on 1mol. alcohol.
