Abstract

1389369 Smoke preventing BULTENKANTHAL AB 17 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39034/73 Heading F4B [Also in Division F1] Impurities in a polluted gas are destroyed by exposing the gas to a high temperature by passing it over electric resistance heater elements having a temperature of between 1250- 1750‹ C., preferably 1500‹ C. The heater elements are of a low-porosity material consisting mainly of molybdenum disilicide as described in Specification 1,267,988. The rate of flow of the gas is not more than 5 m./sec. In the form of Fig. 1, the heater elements are thin hair-pin-shaped wires 11C supported by hangers 11E from bars 11D across the duct 10. There are a number of heater elements in each row and a number of rows. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the heater elements are inside rigid tubular frames. In another form the heater element is in the form of a tube of resistance material and is mounted inside a sleeve so that the gas to be purified passes through the tube, out through holes at the other end, between the tube and the sleeve and leaves via an outlet in the sleeve.
