Abstract

1389256 Heating or cooling systems for buildings C T C GmbH 6 June 1972 [8 June 1971 9 Dec 1971] 26331/72 Headings F4S and F4U In the heating or cooling of rooms, a water pipe system 1 is laid as a continuous length in a structural layer 2 of a floor, wall, or ceiling and comprises flow and return pipes 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP> which are parallel and of similar flow area to one another and also in contact with one another along their whole length; control means being provided for causing water at a suitable temperature to flow through the pipes. The pipes may for example, be of plastics material not greater than 25 mm. bore. There may be an additional system 11 of flow and return pipes (e.g. 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP>), connected to the control means for regulating the floor &c. temperature at a particular zone, e.g. near a window 25<SP>1</SP>. Parallel sections of the system 1 are spaced apart by a distance t not greater than 18 cm. For the system 11 the parallel sections are spaced by a distance t<SP>1</SP> not greater than 12 cm. For cooling, the water may be circulated alternatively (a) through a cooling tower 8; (b) through a tank (20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1), cooled by an underground source of cold water circulated through an element (20<SP>11</SP>), immersed in the tank; (c) through an element (7) laid in the ground (7<SP>1</SP>) or surrounded by well or river water; or (d) through the evaporator 9<SP>1</SP> of a heat pump circuit 9. For heating, the water may be circulated through a boiler 4, or through the condenser of the heat pump circuit 9. This latter may be achieved by reversing the flow in the heat pump circuit as used for cooling, using a four-way valve (15, Fig. 2), incorporated in the circuit. In this reversible heat pump circuit (Fig. 2), the other heat exchange element (9V) in the system, which functions as the condenser or evaporator as appropriate, may be laid in the ground or in well or river water. In the system as shown, water which has been reheated say in the boiler 4 or recooled say in the cooling tower 8, passes to flow and return headers 1<SP>111</SP> and 1<SP>1V</SP>. These are connected to the flow and return pipes 1<SP>1</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP>, 1<SP>11</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP>. The circuit comprising the flow and return pipes 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP> includes additional heating and cooling means. The additional heating means comprises an electric heater element 24 controlled by a room thermostat 24<SP>111</SP> and a flow thermostat 24<SP>11</SP>. The room thermostat 24<SP>111</SP> also regulates, through a hygrostat 26, the operation of the heat pump circuit 9 as appropriate. The structural layer shown comprises a layer 2 of cement or synthetic resin in which the pipes are embedded, followed by a mat 2<SP>1</SP> of steel mesh, a layer 2<SP>11</SP> of thermal and sound insulation, and finally a concrete layer 3.
