Abstract

1389058 Tubular stranding machine W NIEHOFF 14 June 1972 [14 June 1971] 27887/72 Heading D1T A tubular wire stranding machine having an apertured tube rotatable about a stationary wire-spool carrier is stopped when an empty spool is detected by an external monitor comprising a light receiver and a light source arranged to transmit a beam through the aperture into the spool. As shown. Fig. 2, a light beam 10 is directed towards wire 7 on spool 6 and is reflected as beam 12. The outer surface of rotating tube 1 is also reflective. When spool 6 empties the beam 10 is deflected and monitor 8 stops the machine. The spool may be non-reflective, or the wire may be non- reflective and the spool reflective. The tube may be of metal, possibly coated with plastics material, or of plastics material possibly metallised, or of glass-fibre reinforced material.
