Abstract

1388934 Xerographic member XEROX CORP 24 Aug 1972 [2 Sept 1971] 39536/72 Heading G2C A xerographic member capable of storing a developable image comprises a conducting substrate 11, an insulating barrier layer 12, a photo-receptor layer 13 comprising vitreous selenium or selenium-arsenic alloy doped with thallium, and photo-conductive layer 14. Substrate 11 may be brass, aluminium, steel metallized paper, plastic coated with aluminium, glass coated with chromium or tin oxide and may be a sheet, web or cylinder. Barrier layer 12 may be epoxy or polycarbonate resin, or an aluminium oxide coating formed by anodizing an aluminium cylinder. Layer 14 is preferably vitreous selenium which may be alloyed with arsenic, and acts as a charge transport layer. In use the device is first positively charged and simultaneously or subsequently flooded with radiation, generating electron-hole pairs in layer 14 which migrate to and are trapped in layer 13 Fig.2 (not shown). The device is then negatively charged Fig.3 (not shown) and exposed to imaging radiation Fig.4 (not shown) generating further electron-hole pairs in layer 14 and resulting in recombination of electrons and holes at the trap sites in areas exposed to illumination. The remaining negative charge is removed using a conductive rubber roller and a latent image remains on layer 13 Fig.5 (not shown). The potential of the charge trapped may be varied by applying very high fields across the storage layer.
