Abstract
1388695 Furnaces with burner assemblies JOHN ZINK CO 31 July 1972 35690/72 Heading F4T A furnace 12 is heated by an atmospheric burner 10 mounted in a hole 28 in a, preferably ceramic, block 18 forming part of the furnace wall, and that portion of the burner extending outwards from the outer surface of the furnace wall is enclosed in a housing 52 having a mounting plate 50 attached to a steel outer plate 22 of the furnace via spacers 53 thus providing a gap between the plate 50 and outer wall surface through which combustion-supporting air passes to the burner 10, such air acting to cool the outer surface 18<SP>1</SP> of block 18 and thus being preheated, and the housing 52, which preferably has a sound absorbing lining 66 retained by a perforated sheet 64, acts to reduce the noise from the burner outside the furnace. The air is directed on to surface 18<SP>1</SP> by a part 58 of housing 52, some of the air passing to an inlet 36, the effective cross-section of which is adjustable by a movable gate 35, and thence into a mixing tube 38, 41 due to injector action of fuel gas from a nozzle 34. The remainder of the air passes into the furnace through hole 28, the inlet to which is variable in effective area by means of an adjustable plate 68. In a further embodiment the portion 58 of housing 52 is omitted and the outer surface (18a) of block 18 is level with the outer surface of the blocks 16, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a third embodiment, the outer surface of the block 18 is formed with radial grooves (74) into which the incoming air is directed, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). The furnace may be of the radiant wall type, the outlet of the burner pipe 41 having a conical diverter 44 diverting the fuel-air mixture through slots 46 on to radial ridges 29 on the block 18.
