Abstract
1388202 Welding by fusion COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 3 March 1972 10166/72 Heading B3R [Also in Division H1] When making a weld by means of an electron beam which oscillates along the weld line, different rates of heating are required at different points in the oscillation cycle wherein the different stages of the weld occur, such as initial heating, maintaining the material in a molten state, and slow cooling to allow proper crystallization; this is achieved by modulating the oscillation speed, the beam intensity, or the current supplied to the focusing coil, in synchronism with the basic oscillation frequency or a mulitple thereof. In one example at a welding speed of 20 metres/minute the longitudinal oscillation has an amplitude of 5 mm. and a period of À54 milliseconds, and the beam is also oscillated transversely at 10 times the frequency of the longitudinal oscillation, the amplitude of the transverse oscillation varying at the longitudinal oscillation frequency. The waveform controlling the beam intensity comprises a rising portion lasting À05 to 1 milliseconds, a linear falling portion lasting 0À1 to 0À14 milliseconds, and a final exponential falling portion lasting about 0À3 milliseconds. The electron gun may be either symmetrical or asymmetrical.
