Abstract
1388184 Contact apparatus; catalytic apparatus KENICS CORP 29 Feb 1972 9345/72 Headings B1F and B1R [Also in Division F1] Contact apparatus, Fig. 2 comprises a series of twisted, baffles 12 fixed to column 10, adjacent baffles being twisted in opposite directions. In Fig. 3, the baffles contact mesh 19 which is spaced from column 10 and is supported by studs 20. The apparatus can be used for countercurrent washing of air containing sulphur dioxide with water, for treating furnace or engine exhaust gases containing carbon monoxide or nitrogen dioxide with black copper oxide catalyst which catalyst coats the contacting surfaces, for breaking down organic pollutants in water by contact with a biologically active slime coating, or for reducing the viscosity of cooked starch by subjecting the starch to an enzyme coating.
