Abstract

1388118 Automatic control of viscosity BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 16 Nov 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 58630/71 Heading G1S [Also in Division G3] To continuously monitor the quality of a very viscous liquid, e.g. bitumen, a side stream is passed through a hydraulic resistance 5 (coiled tube) by a constant flow pump 2, the pressure drop is measured at 6 and compared with a reference in a controller 8, any difference causing adjustment at 9 of the on/off ratio of power to a heater 4, thereby keeping the viscosity of liquid in resistance 5 constant; the temperature needed to achieve this is measured at 11 and displayed and/or recorded at 12, this corresponding to what the viscosity would be at a standard temperature. The average of several thermocouples, resistors or thermistors 11a ... 11d may be used. Stainless steel diaphragms 7 separate the liquid from a working fluid for device 6. 3 is a synchronous motor and 14 a supply of flushing liquid. The controller 8 preferably has P.I.D. characteristics.
