Abstract

1387778 Liquid trap VIRGINIA CHEMICALS INC 31 July 1973 36363/73 Heading BIT [Also in Division F4] A trap 10, whereby liquid refrigerant and oil passing from the evaporator 22 are separated from refrigerant vapour upstream of the compressor 24 in a refrigeration circuit, comprises a chamber having an inlet 18 and an outlet 20. The entering gas disperses across the diameter of the chamber causing the majority of entrained liquid droplets to impinge on the walls and run down to the bottom or to fall to the bottom. The vapour passes to the outlet 20 through a J-shaped tube, the inlet end of which is spaced from the inlet 18 and is aligned therewith. A small aperture is provided in the side wall of the bottom portion of the J-tube and venting apertures are provided at the connection of the J-tube with the outlet 20 whereby liquid accumulated at the bottom of the J-tube during shut-down is prevented from passing through the outlet as a slug on re-start.
