Abstract

1387732 Draw-texturing process and apparatus MONSANTO EUROPE SA 13 Aug 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 41700/72 Headings D1D and D1F In a process for drawing and false-twist texturing a thermoplastic continuous filament yarn by passage sequentially over a feed roll 9, a heater 4, a yarn guide 5 and a draw roll 6, the draw roll 6 comprises a substantially hemispherical portion 12 that intersects a coaxial cylindrical portion 13 having a diameter smaller than the portion 12, the yarn passing in frictional sliding and rolling contact with the portion 12 and thence round the cylindrical portion 13, the yarn being drawn in the vicinity of the heater 4 and the yarn being twisted while hot, and the yarn guide 5 being situated adjacent the outer circumferential edge 16 of the portion 12 so that the yarn meets the edge in a direction tangential to the portion 12 at the edge, and has a component parallel to the direction of rotation of the edge. A cooling zone 15 is provided between the heater 4 e.g. a pin and the guide 5, the length of the cooling zone being between 7 and 150 centi-- metres, preferably 10-75 centimetres. The draw-textured yarn may be subjected to after- treatment e.g. heat relax treatment to develop the bulk, the treatment preferably being carried out after fabric formation. The yarn preferably contains at most five filaments, and may be polyamide, polyester, polyurethane, polyolefine or cellulosic. Numerical examples are given. The draw roll is preferably made of metal, e.g. stainless steel, but may be of rubber, hard-vulcanised rubber, acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene terpolymer, toughened polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon or a phenolformaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resin, or ceramic material. Alternatively, wood, brass or an aluminium alloy may be used coated with polyurethane lacquer, rubber, polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon or plasticised polyvinyl alcohol.
