Abstract

1387651 Electric irons GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 May 1972 21479/72 Heading D1A [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] An electric flat-iron has a thermostat to maintain the soleplate at a normal working temperature and a thermal cut-out to open the circuit if the thermostat fails to protect the soleplate against reaching an abnormally high temperature which would cause the soleplate to melt. The cut-out 66 comprises a resilient stainless steel spring strip 68 soldered or bonded to a wire 70 of manganese nickel by a eutectic alloy 72 which melts at a predetermined temperature so that strip 68 springs away from wire 70. The alloy 72 is heated partly by heat from the sole-plate and the surrounding parts by conduction, connection and radiation and partly by an increment of heat from strip 68 generated in strip 68 by its own internal resistance, this increment being insufficient to increase the temperature of alloy 72 to its melting point at normal working temperature but sufficient to increase alloy 72 to its melting point of the thermostat does not open the circuit before an abnormally high soleplate temperature occurs. The alloy 72 is of 1.5% silver, 1% tin, 97.5% lead and less than 0.4% antimony and has a melting point at 588‹F. The soleplate is of aluminium and the normal maximum working temperature of the soleplate is around 550‹F and the cut-out opens the circuit prior to a soleplate temperature of 950‹F, the curves showing the relationship between the alloy 72 temperature and the soleplate temperature being in Figs. 4, 5, 6 (not shown) and the soleplate starting to melt between 900 and 1100‹F. The thermostat is bimetallic and adjustable for different materials being ironed. Wire 70 is connected to one end 60 of the heating element and the electrical circuit of the iron is from supply terminal 42, through the thermostat to internal terminal 32, through cut-out 66, through the heating element to its opposite end 62, then to supply terminal 64.
