Abstract

1387529 Electrodepositing bright zinc OXY METAL FINISHING CORP 16 April 1973 [17 April 1972 20 Feb 1973] 18263/73 Heading C7B An aqueous alkaline Zn electroplating bath contains alkali metal zincate, polyethyleneimine and as brightener a N - containing heterocyclic compound of the formula: where X is S or NR 3 ; n is 0 or 1; A is C=S, CHSR 3 or C=NR 3 (when n is 1), CN(R 3 ) 2 , CSR 3 or CH (when n is 0); R3 is H, C 1-4 alkyl or phenyl, and R 1 , R 2 is R 3 or together with the attached C atoms form an aromatic ring which may be substituted by a water solubilizing group, e.g. hydroxy, alkoxy, carboxy, amino, or by chloro, bromo, cyano or nitro. The zincate may be present as 5-50 g/l. ZnO and 50-250 g/l. NaOH, and the brightener as 0.005-10 g/l. amino. 2-alkylimino benzothiazole or amino-2-mercaptobenzo-thiazole; 0.2-100 g/l. polyethyleneimine may be present. The bath may be free of cyanide and may additionally contain anisaldehyde, glue, polyvinyl alcohol or glycerol ester thereof, gelatine, peptone; and as chelating agents nitrilo-triacetic acid or EDTA or alkali metal (e.g. Na) salts thereof. The substrate may be steel.
