Abstract
1387494 Automatic control of arc welding E RIVA 10 June 1972 27226/72 Heading G3R A manual D.C. arc welding set includes a feedback loop adjustable by a variable resistor provided on a welding electrode holder. As shown, a D.C. welding electrode in a holder 8 is supplied from an A.C. line 1 by way of a step down transformer 4, regulator-rectifier 5, and smoothing inductor 9. The welding current is sensed by a transformer 6 passing a signal through a currentsetting potentiometer 15 and rectifier 14 to a control circuit 13 including an amplifier, reference source and pulse oscillator, Fig.9 (not shown). The circuit 13 supplies firing pulses to the regulating unit 5 which includes a bridge formed by two diodes and two SCR's with a flywheel diode across the output, (Fig.9), so that the welding current is held at a desired value. In modifications, the current may be sensed by a resistor, an inductor, or a D.C. transformer. The sensor may be connected on either the A.C. or D.C. side of the unit 5. A three-phase arrangement is also described.
