Abstract

1409028 Automatic control of arc current GRIESHEIM GmbH 22 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 13864/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] A circuit for supplying an arc welding set comprises a transformer 11, a current adjusting circuit 12, a comparator 14 for comparing predetermined and actual values of the welding current, and a pulse generator 15 connected to the actual valve input of the comparator. The welding set is used for TIG pulsed D.C. arc welding, the transformer 11 being connected via a transductor 26 and a rectifier 38 to a welding torch 42 and a workpiece 43. The actual welding current is sensed by a current transformer 19 and compared with the predetermined value set by a potentiometer 17. The output of the comparator controls the firing of a uni-junction transistor 32 which in turn controls the firing angle of a thyristor 28 connected to the control coil 26a of the transductor. Deviations of the welding current from the predetermined value adjust the firing angle of the thyristor 28 to vary the current in the coil 26a, thereby varying the resistance of the transductor windings 26b to maintain the welding current at the predetermined value. The pulse generator 15, which comprises an astable multi-vibrator, enables a pulsed welding current to be provided, the duration of each welding pulse being determined by a resistor 25 and the interval between the pulses being determined by a resistor 24. In a modification the transductor 26 and rectifier 38 are replaced by a rectifier circuit including diodes and thyristors.
