Abstract

1387336 Surgical tools MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 1 Aug 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 35847/72 Heading A5R A surgical tool for holding cutting or piercing bone or tissue comprises tool members moved by operating means activated by a fluid supplied under pressure through a valve seat controlled by a valve, means being provided for disengaging the valve from the valve seat and for automatically closing the valve when pressure exerted against the operating means reaches predetermined valves. Blades 20, 22 having sharpened edges 28, 30 are moved by operating means 80 comprising pistons 100, 104 joined by stem 102 and movable under the control of a trigger mechanism 77 controlling the supply of gas from inlet 70. The mechanism 77 comprises a piston 140 held against a bushing 162 by spring 166 and having a skirt portion 144 defining a valve seat 158 cooperating with a valve 184 movable by a trigger member 177 to permit gas to flow through passages 76, 156, 78 into chamber 96. From chamber 96 the gas acts on piston 104 and also flows through passages 110, 112 to exert pressure on piston 100 therebycausing piston assembly 82 to move against the action of spring 58 to slide blade 20 forwardly relative to blade 22. If trigger member 177 is maintained in the position shown forces exerted by the gas on assembly 82 will equalize the force exerted by spring 58 and force is then exerted on piston 140 by gas backing up in chamber 165 to overcome spring 166 whereupon piston 140 separates from bushing 162 and valve seat 158 moves into engagement with valve 184. The system remains in equilibrium until further rearward movement of the trigger member is effected. On release, trigger member 177 is returned by spring 182 thereby opening exhaust passage 170. Gas acting on piston 140 flows to atmosphere via passageway 135b, 72, and spring 166 moves piston 140 into engagement with bushing 162. Gas in chambers 94, 96 flows to atmosphere via passageway 164, 170, 135b, 72 and gas in chamber 92 flows to atmosphere through openings in cylinder 90 and passages 135a, 170, 135b, 72. The blades 20, 22 may be replaced by a scissor-type mechanism or by a punch mechanism.
