Abstract

1387281 Poly-titanic acid and poly-zirconic acid gels C & A LABORATORIES Inc 11 Jan 1972 1151/72 Heading C1A and C1N [Also in Divisions AS and C2] Gelatinous condensed ortho-acids of formula where M is Ti or Zr, are prepared by hydrolysis of ortho titanate or zirconate esters, e.g. the alkyl esters, or by hydrolysis of TiCl 4 or ZrCl 4 . In the latter case hydrolysis is preferably effected with ice, followed if desired by neutralization, e.g. with dilute ammonia; acidification of the suspension, e.g. with citric acid, may be carried out to give a precipitate of hydrated titanium or zirconium hydroxide. The products are used in sun-screen compositions.
