1386858 Cutter chains CINCINNATI MINE MACHINERY CO 25 April 1972 19182/72 Heading F2Q A continuous trim chain for a non-oscillating drum-type mining machine comprises a number of elongated link elements 9 of equal length and width, each of the link elements having a transverse perforation at each end, and the link elements are arranged in rows in which alternate rows are interdigitated with intermediate rows, with their ends interconnected by pins 32 passing through the perforations, the number of link elements in the alternate rows being one greater than in the intermediate rows. Some of the link elements 14 may carry cutting tools 25 and be arranged in staggered formation along the length of the chain. Apart from the tool holder blocks 20 welded or integrally formed on the links 14, the links 14 are in all other respects identical to the links 9. An alternative cutting tool holder link is illustrated in Fig. 11 (not shown). The interconnecting pins 32 may be plain studs with sleeves 35 screwed and pinned on each end or alternatively (Fig. 9 not shown) may be formed with double headed ends which are arranged to pass through enlarged bores (11b) intersecting the link perforations (11a) (Fig. 10, not shown) for rapid assembly or release of the link elements, the chain being slackened during such assembly and/or replacement of the link elements. Pairs of spacers 31 having the same width as the links may be substituted for selected ones of the links. The chain may be adapted for use as a track tread for a self-propelled mining machine, a modified form of link being illustrated in Fig. 12 (not shown), for this purpose. In either application, the chain may be driven by sprocket teeth (not shown), engaging link spaces 37 at the outer chain edge, or spaces 37a between link spacers 31 at the chain centre.
