1386742 Cable joints INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 7 June 1973 [13 June 1972] 27279/73 Heading H2E A jointing accessory for use in a joint between cable lengths or at a sealing end, comprises a casing 10 enclosing the cable end and includes a prefabricated stress control element 16, of elastomeric material, e.g. silicone rubber, which embraces winding 15, of impregnated paper insulation, and has a tapered portion 19, which is in contact with cut back metal sheath 12, of lead, or aluminium, and is covered with a layer of conductive or partially conductive material 20, electrically connected to sheath 12, and may consist of carbon-loaded, paper tape or elastomeric material. Winding 12 is tapered at end 23 and individually insulated conductors 14, diverge away to a terminal (not shown). The accessory further comprises a metal casing 17 electrically connected and secured to sheath 12 by plumbing 18, sheath 12 being normally covered by outer cover 11, of e.g. polyvinylchloride. When a lead sheath 12 is used, it is cut back, an annular end portion thereof is flaired outwards, the element 16 is pushed along the cable to line 25, and the sheath is then closed thereon. In another embodiment, when an aluminium sheath is used, it is a loose fit in order, during extrusion thereof, not to damage the winding 15, which is covered by screen of carbon loaded tapes in electrical contact with the sheath. During formation of the stress control electrode, contact is made between this screen and the covering 20.
