Abstract

1386563 Photographic anti-halation layers AGFA-GEVAERT AG 5 June 1973 [8 June 1972] 26679/73 Heading G2C Photographic materials having an alkali-soluble anti-halation layer and between said layer and the support a barrier layer comprising a salt of an acetal of a polymer of vinyl alcohol and an aldehyde sulphonic acid. A subbing layer e.g. containing cellulose diacetate may lie between said barrier layer and the support and the alkalisoluble anti-halation layer may contain as binder a nitrated copolymer of styrene and acrylic acid and a formaldehyde/p-hydroxy-benzoic acid condensation product. The vinyl alcohol polymer of the acetal may be a homopolymer containing some unhydrolyzed vinyl acetate residues or a copolymer of vinyl alcohol with vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl methyl ether, acrylonitrile or styrene. The aldehydes used in the acetal include butyraldehyde sulphonic acid, benzaldehyde-2:4-disulphonic acid and benzaldehyde- 4-sulphonic acid. The barrier layer prevents migration of plasticizer from the film support to the anti-halation layer preventing the decrease in solubility of the latter in developers containing hard water. The barrier layer also acts as an antistatic layer.
