Abstract
1386549 Manufacture of zinc oxide MITSUI MINING & SMELTING CO Ltd 11 April 1973 [11 April 1972] 17340/73 Heading C1A ZnO is prepared by oxidizing zinc vapour in a combustion chamber (1) at 800-1000‹ C. and sub-atmospheric pressure and passing the oxide into a flue (3) which has at its downstream end a damper (6) which opens into a tube (7) for a carrier gas, the residence time in the flue being 10-30 seconds and the temperature immediately before the damper 300-800‹ C. The pressure in the combustion chamber may be maintained at 4-8 mm. of water below atmospheric by automatic adjustment of the damper which is preferably a louvre damper, this may also control the temperature of combustion. The carrier gas may be controlled so that the temperature at the outlet from the damper is 120-160‹ C. The flue may be at least 10 m. and preferably 17 m. long and heat insulated. The Zn vapour may be taken from a lead column of a ZN refining process using reflux trays and a liquation furnace may be used. The ZnO may contain less than 10 p.p.m. Pb, 5 p.p.m. Cd and 10 p.p.m. Fe.
