Abstract

1386418 Microwave heaters THOMSONCSF 8 March 1972 [9 March 1971] 10874/72 Heading H5H In order to minimize the chance of damage to the high frequency source of a heating device Fig. 1, comprising a generator 1 an absorbing load 7 and a 3 dB coupler 3 communicating to a load circuit 11, the radiation is injected into the load circuit from the two parts 4, 5 of the coupler 3 via wave guide sections 9 and 10 which redirect the radiation + and - 45 degrees to the original direction of propagation in the coupler 3. The load circuit 11 Fig. 2 comprises a wave guide with a turning stub 12, a resonant cavity 14 and a further turning stub 15 to tune the cavity. The object to be heated is introduced axially via hole 18. The guide 11 may be circular and the axes of guide sections 9 and 10 enter guide 11 along perpendicular radii. The symmetry of the arrangement reduces the occurrence of spurious reflection. A further embodiment Fig 4 (not shown) has a flared horn, instead of the cavity 14, for treatment of surfaces, e.g. breaking up concrete.
