Abstract

1386353 Hydro-pneumatic suspension systems MESSIER 6 July 1972 [9 July 1971] 31794/72 Heading B7D The length of a hydro-pneumatic suspension unit associated with a vehicle wheel is controlled by a distributer comprising a valve slide 5 connected to a suspension member for displacement relative to a sleeve 3 which is itself displaceable by an electric motor 28 to enable the driver of the vehicle to vary the set suspension height. A central annular groove 33 in the slide 5 and grooves 30, 36 in the sleeve 3 communicate through passages 28, 32, 35 in the sleeve and grooves 29, 31, 34 in a body 1 with ports R, U, P connected to an oil return pipe, a pipe leading to an oil chamber in the suspension unit, and an oil feed pipe respectively. The sleeve 3 terminates at one end in a screw 25 co-operating with one gear 26 of a reduction unit 26, 27 driven by the motor 28. A head 13 connected to the suspension member actuates the slide 5 through a spring 10, and a piston 14 on the slide and a cylinder 15 in the sleeve 3 form hydraulic dampings for damping movement of the slide. A rod 22 connected to the sleeve 3 carries the slider of a potentiometer 23 and at extremes of sleeve movement actuates micro-switches 38, 39 for de-energizing the motor 28. Diodes 43, 44 are connected in parallel with the microswitches 38, 39 so that the motor 28 can be reenergized to move the sleeve in the opposite direction even when one of the micro-switches is open. The motor 28 may be controlled by the driver through a two-pole reversing switch, an indication of the height setting being provided by an electrical instrument connected to the potentiometer 23, or the motor may be supplied differentially by the potentiometer 23 and a control potentiometer so that the motor rotates in correspondence with manually rotated control means.
