Abstract
1386324 Coating GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 15 May 1972 [21 July 1971] 22672/72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C2 C3 and H5] A cured resin film of a thickness up to 5 mils and a pencil hardness of at least HB is provided on the surface of a substrate by a substantially polution free method which comprises (a) coating the substrate with a radiation sensitive solventless organic resin having a viscosity of from 50 to 2,500 centipoises at 25‹C and (b) while maintaining the temperature of the formed resin coating below 60‹C, curing the resin by exposing it for up to one minute to ultraviolet radiation having an intensity of at least 2 watts per square inch, at least part of which has a wavelength falling in the range from 1,849Š to 4,000Š and which is substantially free from radiation of wavelength greater than 7,500Š. The radiation sensitive solventless organic resin is an aliphatically unsaturated organic resin curable under atmospheric conditions in a substantially pollution free manner. Substantially pollution free means or loss of less than 6% by weight of resin as a result of the curing operation. In the Examples panels of a 2, 2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane polycarbonate, panels of extruded ABS polymer coated with a wood grain stain, panels of high impact polystyrene, aluminium panels and glass slides were coated with (i) a polyester resin prepared from fumaric acid, tetrahydrophthalic acid, diethylene glycol and glycerol, hydroquinone, tertiary vinyl catechol, styrene, benzoin methyl ether, benzotriazole and a silanol terminated diorganosiloxane fluid, (ii) a polyester resin prepared from fumaric acid, tetrahydrophthalic acid and diethylene glycol, hydroquinone, styrene, benzoin methyl ether and ethyl cyclohexyl-2-cyano-3, 3-diphenyl acrylate (iii) the styrenated polyester resin of (ii), benzoin methyl ether, amorphous silica, calcium carbonate, talc, hydrated alumina, glass fibres or barium sulphate (iv) the styrenated polyester of (ii), divinyl benzene, benzoin methyl ether and various pigments (v) a polyimide prepared from maleinide, paraformaldehyde and toluene, diethylene glycol divinyl ether (vi) bis maleimidomethyl) toluene, a maleimido methyl polycarbonate prepared from N-chloro methyl maleimide and 2, 2-bis (4-hydroxy phenyl) propane, phenyl, vinyl ether, styrene and diethylene glycol divinyl ether and (vii) bis (imido methyl) toluene and vinyl #-chloro-ethyl ether, diethylene glycol divinyl ether, with or without benzophenone or a mixture of phenyl vinyl ether and diethylene glycol divinyl ether. The coatings on the substrate were cured with ultra-violet radiation.
