Abstract

1386090 Electrolysis electrode; cleaning Ti ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 22 Dec 1971 [26 Dec 1970] 59739/71 Headings C7B and C7E An anode (e.g. for the electrolysis of aqueous alkali metal chloride solutions) comprises a coating either of Ru and Pt or of Ru and Rh on a metal base (e.g. of Ti, Zr, Ta or alloys of those metals). The coating is a mixture of (a) crystalline Ru having a lattice constant which is at least 0.1% greater than the normal lattice constant thereof when Ru is used alone and (b) at least 3 wt per cent (based on the coating) of crystalline Pt or Rh having a lattice constant which is at least 0.1% smaller than the normal lattice constant thereof when Pt or Rh is used alone. The coating may be electro-deposited, the composition of the deposit depending on the current density used. Specified electro-plating baths contain H 2 SO 4 and various of nitrosoruthenium chloride, sulphamate or sulphate or ruthenium sulphate; (NH 3 ) 2 Pt(NO 2 ) 2 ; and Rh(OH) 3 . Subsequently to electroplating, the coated base may be calcined first in Ar and thereafter in air to form an oxidized film. A Ti base, before being electro-plated, may be cleaned by a multi-stage process including dipping in a mixed liquid composition of 86% H 3 PO 4 400 ml 60% HNO 3 50 ml 48% or 40% HF 100 ml water to make 1000 ml.
