Abstract
1385911 Electroluminescence EMI Ltd 17 Feb 1972 [24 March 1971] 7860/71 Heading C4S [Also in Division H1] A double injection electroluminescent device comprises a first material which luminesces at one wavelength and a second material provided in the first material as host lattice, the second material being stimulated to luminescence at a second wavelength by the luminescence of the first material. The first material may be anthracene, the second material, rubrene, perylene, tetracene or 2-21-dihydroxy- 1 - 1<SP>1</SP> - naphthaldiazine. The anthracene may be 99À999% pure with a 50% transparent anode. The anode may comprise a thin layer or grid of Au or an alloy of Se and Te. The cathode may comprise Na or K or an alloy thereof. The anode and/or cathode may alternatively comprise C fibres as in Specification 1,380,417. Encapsulation prevents oxygen and water ingress. Anthracene emits in the 4300 region and 1-10 p.p.m. 2-2<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy-1-1<SP>1</SP>- naphthaldiazine for example, converts to yellowish green light to which the eye is more sensitive. The converter material is incorporated within the lattice by doping. Exciton and resonance transfer mechanisms are mentioned.
