Abstract

1385879 Thread rolling ALFORD & ALDER (ENGS) Ltd 2 Aug 1972 [5 Aug 1971] 36736/71 Heading B3M A thread rolling attachment supports a thread rolling die 21 on a transfer machine 12, the die being driven by a shaft 24a of the machine and being movable axially relative to a fixed workpiece 40. The die is supported on a carrier 19 which is slidable on the ends of four pedestals 13, 16 attached to the machine. The die is biased towards the right by springs 31 which act between a fixed yoke 17 and rods 30 coupled to a flange 29 (which is connected to the die). In operation, the whole assembly is moved to the left until the rolls of the die engage the workpiece. The assembly is then halted, and the rolls thread themselves on to the workpiece and draw the die to the left until a stop 37 is engaged by the workpiece. This causes the rolls to release the workpiece, thereby allowing the springs 31 to draw the die to the right. Compressed air is supplied to pistons in two of the pedestals to cushion the movement of the die.
