1384919 Filtering water INSTITUT GORNOGO DELA SIBIRSKOGO OTDELENIA AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 6 June 1972 26271/ 72 Heading B1D [Also in Division C1] A process for purifying water (e.g. tap water) comprising producing a metal (e.g. Al or Fe) hydroxide electrolytically in the water and filtering the water through a water-insoluble granular material so that a layer of metal hydroxide is formed on the granular layer to form a filtering aid layer. The filtered water may be treated with an ion-exchange resin. The electrolysis may be carried out continuously or intermittently. In the Fig. the water is passed through electrolysis bath 1 containing oxidisable and non-oxidisable electrodes, degaser 3 and filter layer 5 (e.g. of anthracite and/or sulphocarbon i.e. carbon treated with sulphuric acid) on the top of which is formed a metal hydroxide filtering layer 7.
